Shopping for Fine Art on a Visit to Acadia National Park? A Special Gallery Off the Beaten Path

Once you learn about Judy Taylor’s paintings, you’ll start secretly hoping for a rainy day so that you’ll get to go to her studio during your vacation.

Landscapes, portraits, figuratives, and still lifes are all a part of her oeuvre, but Maine icons are present throughout.  For a painter trained in Chicago, New York, and western France, Maine now seems to have captured her imagination.

Her landscapes take you out on a fishing dock or along a birch-lined path.  A portrait of three brothers is set against the background of an island of spruce.  My favorite still life is a study of buoys.

But to reduce Judy Taylor’s work to her subjects is a disservice to this serious artist.  Her work has been chosen for two Public Art projects recently. In 2008, she completed a large mural for the Maine Department of Labor, and, in 2009, Mesa State College selected five of her landscapes for a new classroom building.

Here in her Public Art she seems to be able to give way to her love of scale, form, and the human figure in a way that’s hinted at in all of her other work.  And when you see this, you enjoy her other work even more.

Judy Taylor teaches three or four workshops a year around the country and plans to host a sketch/hike class this summer in Acadia.  In the past she has offered “Drop In Drawing Class.”  Says Judy, “We focus on lessons from the masters. I have had anywhere from four to seventeen people drop in from all over the world to spend a couple hours drawing while they visit the island.”

Judy Taylor’s studio and gallery is located in Seal Cove right off Pretty Marsh Road on the far western side of Mount Desert Island.

And you don’t need a rainy day to go.
